The start of a new year is an excellent time for reflection and planning. While we're strong believers that you can set and achieve goals any time, for some, new year's resolutions are the perfect opportunity to get motivated and gain momentum.
Whether you're looking to improve overall health, lose weight, build muscle or work on your mental health, PeopleOne Health is always working to add features that can help you reach any resolution and goals throughout the year ahead. With goals in mind as we enter a new year, I figured now would be a good time to share some of my favorite features that can help you reach your goals.
No matter your ambitions and in addition to the tech features listed below, I always come back to a few key techniques that apply to achieving any type of success:
- Build momentum by setting, reaching and tracking small goals over and over and over. Maintaining some form of tracking your goals releases dopamine and makes you want to do it again. Setting and checking off daily mini goals as you achieve them is a fun way to make your life like a game. A game you want to win, right?
- Set SMART goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. Behavior change experts all agree that this goal-setting technique is key in identifying achievable goals with a practical approach that sets you up for success without frustration. - Know why you want to be healthy and fit to reach your goals. Reflecting on this question can help you stay motivated on those dark stressful days we all face sometimes on the journey to wellness. Your why may very well be the best tool in your toolbox if and when motivation hits a roadblock so work to really understand how your life would improve from any changes you plan to make before you get started.
Now, on to the list of tech features you can use for your resolutions:
Resolution #1: Adopt a Nutritious Eating Plan
Food tracker: Our food tracker can help you get a handle on what you are eating. You can either do this for a short time period to gain a better understanding of the calories and nutrients in the foods you eat regularly or, if it motivates you, you can track food for longer time periods to stay accountable. Remember, to be successful in food tracking, you don’t need to be exact and I recommend not getting too strict with calories or that can lead to negatives.
Resolution #2: Reframe Your Relationship WIth Food
SparkCoach: Food tracking essentially asks you the same two questions every day: What food did you eat today and what fitness did you do today? We developed SparkCoach with a different script of questions that can help you solve other issues (such as emotional eating) as you track daily food intake. Based on behavior change research, we believe this approach can be more fun than food tracking alone.
Resolution #3: Lose Weight and Reach Goals in All Areas of Life
30-Day Healthy Weight Challenge: Connected to SparkCoach, the start of a new year is the perfect time to join our 30-Day Healthy Weight Challenge. PeopleOne Health's health experts joined forces with goal-setting experts to build a program that helps you transition to a healthier lifestyle. After joining the challenge, you'll receive daily prompts that will educate and inspire you to make lasting changes to your eating and lifestyle habits.
Resolution #4: Get Fit
Fitness Game: A fun way to track your progress with an approach that stresses doing as little as 10 minutes of physical activity most days while also tracking your average minutes. As you seek out daily movement, you'll continue to build your streaks and earn trophies along the way. You can connect most tracking devices, as well. My free mini-book gives you more background on this fitness program and why it works. Learn how doing small amounts of fitness consistently can change your life!
Resolution #5: Be a Goal-Oriented Person
Goals: Our Goals feature is ideal for setting and tracking small goals, one at a time. You can use this as your daily to-do list if you’d like or to keep track of progress toward long-term goals. A revolutionary feature we launched also lets you post your goals to our community teams as a fun way to get support in reaching your goals.
Resolution #6: Find a Support Squad
Community: In our Community feature, we have several teams where you can give and receive support. Any journey to better yourself will come with good days and bad, so we created Community as a non-judgemental, welcoming space to share wins, get advice on hardships, and find support for all the ups and downs. I try to post in the community most days, and there are many great people with whom you can connect who are all working to reach goals together.
Resolution #7: Stay Motivated No Matter What
SparkPoints: No matter your resolution, we know that continued, unwavering motivation is the most important key to success. SparkPoints bring alive our mission to help you reach one small goal at a time. You can earn points for doing anything on our app or website as a fun way to visualize your journey to reach goals. SparkPoints can be more motivating than you might think, so log on and give it a try!
Have fun reaching your goals! We’ll be here rooting for you every step of the way.
