Since 2018, August has been celebrated as National Wellness Month. But holistic self-care dates back to 3rd century Roman wellness spas and the creation of Yoga in Northern India nearly 5,000 years ago! In 1948 when the World Health Organization (WHO) redefined health as a state of complete mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing, not merely the absence of disease- it launched a huge campaign for what it really means to be WELL.
What Does Wellness Look Like Today?
Physical: The possibilities are endless!
Going for a walk with your dog, friends, or partner
Taking your favorite group fitness class
Setting up an ergonomic workspace
Simply stretching when you wake up in the morning
It all counts- physical wellness should include whatever makes your body FEEL the best!
Mental/Emotional: There are tons of ways to prioritize your mental health!
Schedule breaks/rest throughout your day as needed
Spend time with your favorite people
Start a gratitude journal, it can set the tone for your day
Have the tough conversations when needed
Consider working with a therapist or counselor
We ALL have emotions and can benefit from putting a management strategy in place.
*Remember the WHO definition when prioritizing wellness. It is all-encompassing and can be practiced as prevention! Every aspect of your health is connected and contributes to your overall WELLNESS.
Of course, the goal of wellness is to practice it all year long, but if you are looking to kick off some healthy habits, August is the time!
