Summer is here — time to soak up the sunshine, enjoy outdoor adventures, and savor longer days. But while you’re reaching for your sunscreen, don’t forget one of the most sensitive areas of your body regarding sun exposure: your eyes!

Many people know the risks of UV rays for skin, but the eyes are just as vulnerable, and unlike sunburns, eye damage from ultraviolet (UV) light often goes unnoticed until it adds up over time.

Why UV Eye Protection Matters

Your eyes can be damaged by both UV-A and UV-B rays. Too much exposure to UV radiation can increase your risk of:

  • Cataracts – Clouding of the lens that can lead to vision loss.

  • Skin cancer around the eyelids – Often caused by prolonged sun exposure. 

  • Pterygium (“surfer’s eye”) – A non-cancerous growth on the white part of the eye linked to UV exposure.

1. Wear Sunglasses — Every Day, All Year

Choose shades labeled 100% UV protection or UV400, which block both UVA and UVB rays. Wraparound styles offer even better protection from light coming in from the sides.

2. Don’t Be Fooled by Clouds

UV rays can still pass through overcast skies. If you're outside, your eyes are still at risk, so keep those sunglasses handy.

3. Add a Hat

A wide-brimmed hat can block up to 50% of UV radiation from hitting your eyes and face. Stylish and functional!

4. Be Extra Careful Near Water, Sand, and Snow

These surfaces reflect UV rays, doubling your exposure. The beach, lake, or pool are prime places to up your eye protection game.

5. Think About the Kids
